Super Bowl Sunday ranks as one of the most dangerous times of the year for drunk driving-related deaths. According to a recent article by MADD, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that 43 percent of traffic fatalities were caused by drunk driving on Super Bowl Sunday and the following Monday in 2012, as compared to the 31 percent average for other days of the year.
Couple that with a recent report by the Automobile Club of Southern California that drunk driving-related car crashes increased 75 percent on Super Bowl Sunday, and an increased police response to drunk driving is expected.
“Law enforcement in Arizona takes drunk driving seriously,” said Christopher P. Corso, founding partner of Corso Law Group. “Visitors and residents need to be prepared for the added dangers surrounding a major sporting event like this one and take the precautions necessary not to drink and drive.”
Arizona DUI lawyer Christopher Corso should know. The pair used to prosecute Arizona DUIs for the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office before founding Corso Law Group in 2007.
Risks associated with hosting the Super Bowl include population-related issues. The high volumes of people who attend major sporting events also boost attendance for week-long Super Bowl and NFL Experience block parties in cities like Glendale and Scottsdale, and other celebrations surrounding the Super Bowl game itself.
Arizona’s Department of Public Safety and municipal police departments are responding to increased traffic and expected higher levels of drunk driving with increased police presence, use of photo radar devices and traffic stops.
Police departments throughout the Valley are increasing patrols this week for all Super Bowl related activities, and officers with special badges marked by the Super Bowl logo have been designated to keep these areas safe.
Corso Law Group urges Arizona residents and visitors to use their best discretion and avoid driving under the influence of alcohol.
“Arizona is already very tough when it comes to drunk driving,” Corso said. “With the sheer number of people in Arizona this week, police will surely focus on DUIs and public safety.”
